HP launches plan to build low-power servers

HP brags that Apple is interested in running Project Moonshot servers

The Silicon Valley giant is working with Austin-based start-up chipmaker Calxeda — which uses the ARM technology in its microprocessors — to create servers aimed at companies running large-scale remote computing operations such as Twitter and Facebook. ARM is an investor in Calxeda. The new servers will significantly reduce both power and space requirements, Paul Santeler, vice president of HP’s Hyperscale business within its server division said. HP’s first Calxeda-based pilot server platforms will be available in the first half of next year, Santeler said, but did not reveal when HP expects to sell the production version. Energy-efficient chips made using ARM technology are widely used in tablets and smartphones and ARM executives have said they want to make them popular for personal computers and corporate servers too. British chip designer ARM last week unveiled its first 64-bit architecture, which it said would expand its reach into enterprise applications such as servers currently dominated by Intel. As well as chip designers, HP’s program will include storage, networking and software companies. Along with Calxeda, HP is also developing other servers using Intel’s Atom processor.

The unit includes purpose-built servers and appliances running Hadoop, HPs Vertica or SAPs HANA. Also part of the new unit is the companys CloudSystem integrated offerings, which include software and read this servers specifically built for public, private and hybrid cloud. The move comes as companies like Oracle, IBM and others closely tie their software to specific hardware. Tom Joyce has been chosen to lead Converged Systems as its senior vice president and general manager. He previously was vice president of marketing, strategy and operations of storage at HP. HP also announced that it has united its two server businessesBusiness Critical Systems (BCS) and Industry Standard Servers (ISS)under a single group called HP Servers. The BCS unit focused on Integrity servers, while the ISS unit dealt with the Proliant rack, tower, blade and dense servers. The realignment comes a few weeks after HP introduced the power-efficient Moonshot dense server, which the company described as a new type of server that could replace racks of industry-standard servers.

HP Devises Aggressive Server GTM

However, the biggest story will be around HPs Moonshot servers; the company will start educating its partners through the HP Partner PreSales Center. 25 partners have already been roped in to promote these servers. According to Vikram, Moonshot servers use 89 percent less energy, take up 80 percent less space, and cost 77 percent less than traditional servers. The high-density server market in India is still in its infancy, hence we are educating channels about the value proposition of high-density servers which offer incredible power savings. Channels also need to understand the concept of specialized servers for specialized workloads. In the next quarter HP will try to work with partners to look at the Web hosting market as the first vertical; later, the vendor will start looking at other verticals. Vikram said that the number of partners empowered to sell Moonshot will double by year-end.
