Sony Building Digital Walkman

MORE COMPUTING INTELLIGENCE Who rules Net music? Idei’s comments come amidst a growing battle over how music on the Internet will be sent, received, and played back. The fight came to life last year with the proliferation of MP3 (Motion Picture Experts Group, Audio Layer 3), a compression technology that makes it easy to download music. Though Web sites that use MP3 have helped unknown musicians gain a following online, the technology has also been used to spread pirated music, rankling record companies that hold music rights. Sony’s U.S.-based record company, Sony Music Entertainment, last year joined the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in a group that is fighting MP3 and working on a format for selling copyright-protected music over the Internet. The group, called the Secure Digital Music Initiative, formed soon after the RIAA failed to gain a court injunction to keep an MP3 portable player from being sold. Sony officials say they will not sell MP3-based products and strongly emphasize the need for a secure system that protects copyrighted material from piracy. “We want to make rules because MP3 is already making a market,” said Fujio Noguchi, producer at Sony’s Creative Project Office in Tokyo. Enter the Memory Stick The stick, a miniature flash memory card like those used in digital still cameras, is designed to fit into devices that are about the same length as an AA-sized (1.5 volt) battery.

Argentina’s top netman Del Potro to skip Davis Cup opener

7 and Argentine No. 1 Juan Martin del Potro will skip HP servers UK the 2013 Davis Cup World Group opener against Germany from February 1-3, captain Martin Jaite said Sunday. “We sent emails to all the players likely to be selected and asked them to respond before December 10. Del Potro didn’t answer. On December 20, he then sent me an SMS to tell me that he was not available,” said Jaite. “The relationship with Del Potro isn’t broken, the doors of the team are always open to him.” Argentina were beaten 3-2 in this year’s Davis Cup semifinals by the Czech Republic, the eventual champions. Hp Switches Key Executives, Dashes Hopes For 2014 Revenue Growth

Whitman, who said in May that fiscal 2014 revenue growth was still possible, told analysts on a Wednesday conference call that growth next year was now “unlikely” given the poor performance of the Enterprise Group and PC divisions. “My read was that fiscal 2014 growth was a stretch goal rather than a baseline assumption,” said Shebly Seyrafi, an analyst at FBN Securities. “That has become more challenging.” To meet that challenge, Whitman made a key personnel move on Wednesday, replacing Dave Donatelli with Bill Veghte at the helm of HP’s second-largest business division, the Enterprise Group. Donatelli, a rising star that Wall Street analysts once considered a candidate for a tech CEO position, relinquishes his post as chief of the unit, which sells server, storage image source and software services to large organizations. He will now focus on identifying early-stage technologies for investment, the company said. The executive engineered some of the company’s most significant acquisitions in past years, including of 3Com and 3PAR, which helped catapult HP deeper into the networking and storage markets, respectively. Whitman told analysts on the conference call the computing giant was “back in the market” for strategic acquisitions, which she saw as essential to a continued transformation.

HP lures SMBs with tweaked servers, switches

HP ProLiant ML110 G7

Consider HP’s newly announced FlexFabric Virtual Switch 5900v software, which is to be used with HP’s FlexFabric 5900AF switch . Together, they’re designed to replace VMware’s Virtual Switch, or vSwitch, and give cloud builders a more powerful way to manage networking in their data centers. vSwitch was created by VMware to provide a way to manage network traffic among VMs. Unfortunately, vSwitch has lacked many of the more advanced QoS and network management features of its physical brethren, which makes it more difficult to build a robust and scalable network fabric architecture for a cloud. Some have claimed vSwitch isn’t really a switch, but more akin to a shared network adapter. It works well for small-scale VM setups but doesn’t scale effectively, so it can become a bottleneck. HP claims Virtual Switch solves this problem by providing each VM with its own dedicated switch port on the 5900AF and by allowing the same level of VM-based management. The Virtual Switch can be used as a drop-in replacement for vSwitch, HP further claims, so one’s existing VM configurations don’t need to be disrupted to make use of it. The 5900AF also supports high-end management and flow control features like the virtual Ethernet port aggregation (the 802.1Qbg standard) and the virtual station interface discovery and configuration protocol (VDP). Networking operations that used to have to take place within the VM hypervisor can now be offloaded to the physical switch, says HP. Another VMware-specific feature for FlexFabric, according to HP, is “the ability to track VM resources during and after vMotion activities.” Profiles for such resources will automatically move along with VMs, with no administrative work needed to make it happen.

Cisco Linksys E1200 Wireless-n Router

View all 5 photos in gallery E1200 Design and Specs While not as attractive as the Valet Plus; with it’s almost Apple-esque design, the E1200 boasts a sleek industrial look that netted the new E-series line the 2011 Red Dot Product Design Award. It’s a small, unobtrusive router, with a black, high-gloss finish. Gone from the top of the chassis are the peculiar LED symbols that were hard to decipher (one was shaped like a planet!). Instead, the WAN and LAN ports all have simple, corresponding LEDs that turn a solid green to indicate connectivity. What makes the E1200 superior in performance to the E1000 and even the Valet are some technological advancements. Cisco’s networking chops are apparent in the E1200’s integrated on-chip amplifier, which significantly improves the range of the wireless signal as well as the device’s strong 2×3 internal antenna. The E1200 features four Fast Ethernet ports, so no Gigabit Ethernet, no USB, and only operates at the 2.4 GHz band. Setup and Features The E1200 is set up wirelessly using the new and improved Cisco Connect software. Using the Cisco Connect software I had my laptop connected to the router in under six minutes. The setup process automatically configures the SSID, passphrase, and security for you. Although the Cisco Connect software has not changed much in look since the previous version, there have been some improvements.

Memories of a Cisco Router

Join for Access to Our Exclusive Web Tools

RAM Random Access Memory (RAM) (source) represents the non-permanent or volatile working area of memory on a Cisco router. When the router is powered down, the contents of RAM are lost. Main Processor Memory is where the routing table, ARP tables, and running configuration are stored. Most Cisco 2500 routers will have 2MB of RAM soldered to the system board (this amount, however, depends on the revision number of the router), along with one SIMM slot to add additional RAM. The maximum amount of RAM that can be added to a Cisco 2500 is 16MB. If 16MB is added, that provides a maximum of 18MB of available RAM. If no SIMM chip is present, that 2MB of on-board RAM will be split between both areas, providing each with 1MB of working space. This should be avoided for performance reasons. ROM In older Cisco router models, Read-Only Memory (ROM) chips were used to store the IOS software. In newer models, this is no longer the case.

Cisco patches appliances, switches and routers

One of the vulnerabilities allows attackers to execute commands when the FWSM software is configured for multiple context mode. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in a complete compromise of the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the affected system, Cisco said in a separate advisory published Wednesday. The other FWSM vulnerability is the same SQL*Net Inspection Engine flaw that affects ASA and may result in a reload of an affected device, leading to a denial-of-service condition. Devices are only affected if SQL*Net inspection is enabled. Workarounds are available for three of the ASA and FWSM denial-of-service vulnerabilities and are described in the corresponding advisories. In order to address the other issues, customers have to upgrade to the newly released software versions that correspond to their deployments.

New Hp Sdn Portfolio: Controller, Switches And Network Apps

HP Opens Up Its Switches to OpenFlow

It’s not like they’re buying gear off the shelf. They’re strategically partnering with a [vendor] to help their network, whether it’s Cisco or HP. It’s hard to manage multiple different vendors. People start pointing fingers,” Laliberte said. Network vendors also want the security of owning the entire SDN stack, Gartner’s Skorupa said. “If you’re a company the size of HP, can you afford to be dependent upon a startup?” he said. “Can you build the future of your network offering on a company that could be bought? Do you want to get in a bidding war for Big Switch [Networks]?

As such, if an enterprise already has a valid support subscription for an HP switch, they can get OpenFlow at no additional charge. A full OpenFlow deployment requires switches that are OpenFlow enabled as well as a controller to manage the flows. Currently, school wireless systems UK there are multiple open source OpenFlow controllers available including NOX, Beacon and Maestro among others. HP does not currently have its own OpenFlow controller though that could change in the future. “This is the first step of multiple things that we’re going to be doing with OpenFlow this year,” Gillai said. “You should assume that there will be other pieces coming out in the future that relate to OpenFlow both across more of our switches and in the control plan mechanism.” He added that currently, HP doesn’t a specific recommendation for an OpenFlow controller, though he noted that lots of people are using NOX. That said HP’s OpenFlow switches are already used in the field with a wide variety of controllers. HP’s support for OpenFlow is directly related to the company’s vision for the future of networking which has a lot to do with the virtualization of the network.

Cisco Reveals Its Internet Of Everything Router

Why a one-room West Virginia library runs a $20,000 Cisco router

The system is not a core router like the Cisco CRS, or a successor to the CRS, the company says. Rather, it is a network fabric designed to scale CRS cores and ASR 9000 edge routers in service provider networks from centralized systems to distributed architectures able to accommodate the growth of Internet connected things, like cars, homes and machines. [BUT DIDNT THEY JUST ANNOUNCE New Cisco core router boasts 10X capacity of original ] Cisco expects trillions of these device-driven events to come online in the next decade, a situation the company refers to as the Internet of Everything. Cisco says it plans to equip the CRS systems with the nPower chip as well to improve scale and introduce programmability into the platform for core routing requirements. Cisco says the NCS can transport the entire NetFlix library in less than one second in a full multi-chassis deployment. It converges IP and optical networks in the service provider realm with Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) server and Dynamic Fabric Automation networking in the data center to serve as a central nervous system for a programmable infrastructure founded on the nPower chip and onePK APIs in Cisco operating systems.

Cisco Linksys E1200 Wireless-N Router

In total, $24 million was spent on the routers through a not-very-open bidding process under which non-Cisco router manufacturers such as Juniper and Alcatel-Lucent were not “given notice or any opportunity to bid.” As for Cisco, which helped put the massive package together, the legislative auditor concluded that the company “had a moral responsibility to propose a plan which reasonably complied with Cisco’s own engineering standards” but that instead “Cisco representatives showed a wanton indifference to the interests of the public in recommending using $24 million of public funds to purchase 1,164 Cisco model 3945 branch routers.” In other words, the project has been a stellar example of what not to do and how not to do it. Clay, WV, a tiny outpost among the mountains, has 7 Cisco 3945 routers within .44 miles of each other. A million here, a million there The routers in question were purchased as part of a much larger grant from the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP), which passed out several billion dollars to help upgrade broadband networks across America as part of President Obama’s initial stimulus package in 2009. West Virginia’s cash was meant to wire up the many “community anchor institutions” such as libraries, schools, police, and hospitals across the state with Internet access delivered over fiber-optic lines. As part of the project, the state also had to purchase some sort of router for each institution. Instead of “right-sizing” the routers for their intended destinations, the state group of officials charged with implementing the grant decided they would make things easy by purchasing the exact same router and installing it everywhere, even in the most rural locations they planned to reach. This became controversial in 2012 when local newspapers brought the issue to light and questioned whether the state had not just been boondoggled. The Charleston Gazette noted an official in the state’s Office of Technology had actually e-mailed his colleagues to say “this equipment may be grossly oversized for several of the facilities in which it is currently slated to be installed” but that the warning was not heeded. The issue quickly escalated to Congress , where officials from the executive branch were grilled about the West Virginia situation and whether the federal government had exercised enough oversight of the project. The state of West Virginia has now weighed in with its own report on the routers, and it makes for mind-boggling reading. Consider, for instance, how routers were purchased for the state police.

Parental access still works very efficiently. Users can block Internet access to any computer on a home network or can block at specific times (like when the kids are supposed to be doing homework.) As soon as I blocked another laptop connected to the router from accessing the Internet, that laptop had no access, even without opening and closing its browser. Cisco Connect also allows you to block up to eight URLs. Blocking works well but it’s rather limited when it comes to control. I would like to see Cisco incorporate the ability to block by keywordsa feature I found of value in Asante’s AWRT-550N router ($109, 4 stars). One caveat to using Cisco Connect’s Parental Controls: if you have other parental control software installed it may conflict with Cisco’s software. When I tested Cisco’s Parental Controls I had another vendor’s control software installed. Configuring controls on the Cisco side with the other software installed made Cisco’s software block me from accessing the router’s settings.

Cisco patches vulnerabilities in some security appliances, switches and routers

user avatar

Cisco released new versions of its ASA software to address six denial-of-service vulnerabilities in various components and three authentication bypass vulnerabilities in remote access services. Attackers could cause a device to reload, resulting in denial of service, by exploiting flaws in the way the IPsec VPN service handles ICMP packets; in the SQL*Net inspection engine, and in code for HTTP deep packet inspection, DNS inspection, or clientless SSL VPN, Cisco said Wednesday in a security advisory . In addition, they could gain access to the internal network or gain management access to the affected system via the Cisco Adaptive Security Device Management (ASDM) by exploiting flaws in the digital certificate or remote access VPN authentication procedures, the company said. The affected Cisco ASA Software versions are used on the Cisco ASA 5500 Series Adaptive Security Appliances, Cisco ASA 5500-X Next Generation Firewall, Cisco ASA Services Module for Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches and Cisco 7600 Series Routers, and Cisco ASA 1000V Cloud Firewall. Not all versions are affected by all of the vulnerabilities. In order to determine which vulnerabilities affect the specific school wireless systems UK version used on their equipment and what version they should upgrade to, customers should consult a table included in the advisory. The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches, which are designed for use on backbone networks at campuses and large enterprise branches, and the carrier-class network edge Cisco 7600 Series routers, are also affected by two vulnerabilities in the Cisco Firewall Services Module (FWSM).

It’s up and running in a few clicks. Plus, it’s so easy to use and understand, it helps take our customers from focusing on the ‘how’ of what they need to do, to the ‘why’ of what they need to do to address security issues on their networks.” WatchGuard Dimension offers users a menu of visibility and reporting options to present the information in the way they find most intuitive: Executive Dashboard: This high-level view of network activity shows top trends, top clients, and correlated views of top users and applications. With just a click, users can drill all the way down to individual log data, as needed. Summary Reporting: With the Reporting function, users can choose from more than 70 comprehensive reports, with both summary and detail options tailored for C-level executives, IT directors, compliance officers and small business owners. Summary report options include specific HIPAA and PCI compliance reports, plus the ability to pre-schedule reports for delivery to key stakeholders in a user’s organization. Hierarchical TreeMap: WatchGuard Dimension’s TreeMap, called FireWatch, filters traffic in a way that instantly brings your eye to the most critical information on active users and connections, as well as who and what is using the most bandwidth. The TreeMap view also provides options to pivot, drill-down and filter. Global ThreatMap : ThreatMap features multiple, interactive configurable views on a world map, making it possible to have real-time views of threats per region. That information is critical to helping users identify and fine-tune defenses against those attacks. For Managed Security Solution Providers, the Executive Reporting function in particular is a key feature. “Our HP servers UK customers trust eMazzanti Technologies to secure their networks and feel confident in the quality of the protection they receive,” eMazzanti Technologies CEO Carl Mazzanti said.

IT Pros Guide to Data Protection: Top 5 Tips to Securing Data in the Modern Organization

“Government play is a big play for Tenable. It consists of a big chunk of our business.” Brigham said that the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), formerly known as the Defence Signals Directorate (DSD), is one government department in particular that it is keen to work with. “We’ve been planning to talk to DSD because Tenable will address the Top 36 [Strategies] simply around compliance.” On the enterprise side, it has already signed on SAI Global, which has adopted Tenable’s SecurityCentre and Nessus suite to help identify vulnerabilities and manage patching. Although the code for older versions of Nessus are available as open-source projects, and have been forked into other freely available products like OpenVAS, SAI Global general manager for IT Peter Macarthur-King gave a number of reasons for not rolling out his own security. The former Fujitsu employee said that his company has 68 different development teams globally, and so it was important that the product worked “out of the box”. “I’ve bought a lot of things over the years that ‘worked out of the box’ and we all know none of them do,” he said, expressing his initial scepticism of IT security consultancy Content Security’s recommendation, which SAI Global already uses to implement antivirus services.

McAfee Unveils Next-Gen Enterprise Firewalls

Designing a Defense for Mobile Applications

McAfee Firewall Profiler is a revolutionary new capability that pinpoints in real-time how firewalls rules and rule changes impact application availability, usage and security. Profiler turns hours and days of rule creation deployment and troubleshooting work into a matter of clicks by providing administrators visibility into the business impact of rule changes. By providing an intuitive visual context based on users and applications, Profiler reduces the impact of creating or changing specific rules and helps firewall administrators implement new policies and respond rapidly to business needs. The revised version of Control Center and Firewall Reporter dramatically simplify management of multiple firewalls and enable more accurate audit and compliance reports. Both Profiler and Control Center now integrate with McAfee ePO software. Firewall Control Center now provides ePO software with firewall health data and reports for each firewall. McAfee Firewall Enterprise is now available in traditional appliance form factors, in a new virtualized hardware appliance and as a software-based firewall virtual appliance. These new delivery options allow customers to take advantage of virtualization technologies to lower cost and increase flexibility when consolidating datacenter and application environments and when bringing up new virtual environments.

China To Ramp Up Epidemic Vax System

Officials say the system should be set up by 2015 and expect it will accommodate “major epidemic situations as quickly and effectively as those found in developed countries”5 years later, according to Xinhuanet. It will provide not only increased vaccine production capacity but also improved epidemic monitoring and additional R&D, the report says. Although China uses the current epidemic-response capabilities of developed countries as a benchmark, it may want to shoot a bit higher. The Chinese goals are similar to those of the U.S. , as outlined in the 2010 National Vaccine Plan. It also calls for surge capacity during epidemics, faster manufacturing via new, non-egg-based production processes and additional R&D.

United Vacations launches VAX system for UK

United Vacations launches VAX system for UK By Travolution Comments United Airlines holiday brand United Vacations has launched its first UK trade-only website in a move to give travel agents control over bookings and commission levels. The site Uvagents.co.uk and known as Vax Vacation Access will allow agents to book flights, accommodation, car hire and sightseeing tours across North America. It has been developed by US technology firm Trisept Solutions , a sister company of United Vacations that powers a string of major tour operator engines for the US. Targeting the trade in the UK will give United Vacations an in-road into the busy North American market and allow agents to tap into the companys so-called virtual brochures and its range of flight schedules to London Heathrow with BMI . United Vacations VAX is way ahead of the old Viewdata systems, still used by mass-market operators, the company said. Among its innovations, VAX empowers agents to set (and modify) their commission levels. They can vary both the total selling price and their own percentage, giving them that vital edge over their competitors. The VAX system will also include a multi-booking and dynamic packaging network hardware UK function across its portfolio of 200 North American destinations, alongside the Ski Freedom adventure holiday package deals.

Broadcaster to retire ‘young’ VAX systems

The ABC’s manager of corporate IT projects, Mark Barrett, said the VAXs, which run VMS, handle three key areas of the national broadcaster’s technology infrastructure. “Our corporate email is still DEC All-In-One which is primarily a messaging system but also provides small office applications,” Barrett said. “They also run a set of cataloguing databases for video and audio content, and a speciality application for rights management.” Barrett said the VAX systems have been in place at the ABC since 1985 and replaced older DEC machines like the Systems 20. DEC is now part of Hewlett-Packard (HP) “They ran quite smoothly for years,” he said. “The ABC had a view of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ and the VAXs were reliable and stable but constrained. However, it continues to be a mission-critical system which is used every day to put programs to air.” In the late 1990s an Outlook front-end was put on the DEC email system but, according to Barrett, it didn’t provide all the functionality of Exchange.
